Competition among credit card issuers is tight. In order to entice new customers to apply for their cards, lenders have launched various rewards credit cards. They make your loan beneficial and let you save on purchases. Nowadays there are so many various rewards programs that it's really difficult to understand which one you really need.
Rewards credit cards offer numerous points or cash back rewards programs. A lucky choice is usually made after a good deal of comparing. Make sure that the reward program you want to apply for is something that lets you really benefit from.
Choosing a "good" reward program involves several steps. First of all, analyze your lifestyle and spending pattern to decide what you need. Of course, all rewards programs are tempting. But if you get 10 rewards credit cards with in your pocket, you may not accumulate enough points and get stuck deciding what card to pay with and how much you have already spent on each plastic.
There are 4 main types of rewards programs – cash back rewards, hotel rewards, gasoline rewards and frequent flyer rewards. Cash back rewards offer you to get back a certain percent of the money you spent on your credit card. The amount of cash back is typically between 1% and 5% of your purchases. Gasoline cards will be suitable for those who want to get discounts on gas. Air miles or frequent flyer cards will suit those who often travel or plan to go away on holidays or vacations. Hotel cards are targeted at those who want to reduce their travel costs and save money on hotel stays. Some hotel cards offer you to transfer your hotel points into the same number of frequent flyer miles, so you can redeem your points for free air tickets as well.
Other types of reward programs include Disney rewards, WOW rewards, home improvement rewards, rewards programs for citizens of NY, Chicago or Los Angeles, green rewards and many others.
Comparing programs can be tricky. Most of them follow "1 point per dollar spent" scheme. Look attentively at terms and conditions of credit card contracts. Does the scheme apply to all your purchases or only to purchases from selected stores? If you need to buy from expensive shops in order to accumulate points, then you will spend more than you can gain.
Check if there are any point expiration dates or a limit on the number of points you can earn. Some plastics offer generous points but only for a limited period of time. Then you may be restricted to earning just a few points on your credit card. Be sure that the plastic you chose will give you enough time for collecting points, especially if it is a travel rewards card. Otherwise, you might end up accumulating points in vain just because you can't earn enough points in time.
Comparing credit cards, don't forget about such features as low APR and maintenance fees. If you have a great reward program but your interest rates are high, you won't make a good deal. In this the case the charges can eat away the rewards benefits you earn. Keep in mind that the best way to make profit from rewards program is to pay your balance in full every month.
