Hastings Direct, Moneysupermarket, Comparethemarket, Esure, Confused, Elephant and many more are all literally bidding for the consumers business and each with a huge advertising budget. But remember, this advertising budget has to be reclaimed elsewhere and it's usually built into premiums.

By taking your time and actually thinking about it, the less prominent car insurance companies / websites should be the ones to use. These should have no large advertising budgets to reclaim and therefore deliver you a competitively solid car insurance quote. Try and find reviews on a car insurance company or website before you spend your valuable time filling out a quote form too!
